==Background==
Odd Sverre Lovoll was born in Sande, in Møre og Romsdal, Norway. He immigrated to the United States in 1946 and is a naturalized United States citizen. Lovoll received his education both in Norway and in the United States, passing university exams at the University of Bergen in 1961 and at the University of Oslo in 1966 and 1967. Lovoll graduated from the University of North Dakota (M.A. 1969) and from the University of Minnesota (Ph.D. 1973).〔(''Odd Lovoll'' (St. Olaf College) )〕〔(''Otter Tail County Historical Society'' (Fergus Falls Newspapers, Inc.
